The Festival // Philipp, what pops up in your mind when you hear the words photography and Europe?

Philipp Baben der Erde // Europe is the place I live in and photography is my passion.

The Festival // You live in Paris and Berlin - where is home for you?

Philipp Baben der Erde // Home is where my family and friends are and it’s the place where I can express myself and be creative. Actually this could be everywhere. At the moment my home is Berlin.

The Festival // Most of your works deal with people. What has been your most challenging project so far?

Philipp Baben der Erde // Every project has been, is and will be a challenge for me. Sometimes I already have the complete picture in my head beforehand, but at other occasions the project develops at the very last moment. 2009 was a big challenge for me with all the projects and international exhibitions.

The Festival // Berlin is one of the creative hubs in Europe. What do you like most about it?

Philipp Baben der Erde // I like about Berlin that I can work where I want and when I want, my family, my gay friends, my flatmate, Berlin Mitte, Berghain, my big and cheap flat, the currywurst, …

The Festival // Like in The Festival song we use the slogan “I am European” a lot in our communication. Aren’t you inspired to shoot a series about European faces in Berlin?

Philipp Baben der Erde // I already do! Everything I shoot in Berlin is a European face!

Philipp Baben der Erde born 1981 in Wismar (GDR), living now in Berlin and Paris, began his career as a photographer in 1999. He started as an advertising, fashion and design photographer. At the same time, he worked for the movie studios Babelsberg as a cinematographer specialized in the techniques of stop motion and effects. In the following years, he worked with many companies such as Arte, Columbia Pictures, MTV, Amnesty International, Unicef and Apple.

In 2005, he decided to put himself a lot more into the contemporary art scene, what gave place to numerous exhibitions in Berlin and around the world (Paris, London, New York). During his apprenticeship at the prestigious DFFB (The German Film School), Philipp collected a lot of experience. He works now as a director and cinematographer for music videoclips, documentaries, advertising and short films. His film “Bonzenkarren” (Arte co-production), was introduced in the “International Film Festival Cannes 2008″. Philipp also worked for a lot of events in Germany and France in art direction and public relation - the last time in Cannes for Wim Wenders’ “Palermo Shooting” after-show party.
