Upcoming German director Johannes Thielmann joins The Festival Family

By Florian Mueck • Mar 25th, 2009 • Category: Film Theme, Home Zone Germany, The Festival Embassy, Top News

The Festival Family welcomes its first representative of the director’s guild. Young, ambitious, daring; in today’s film industry these characteristics might be indispensable prerequisites for success. Johannes Thielmann harbors them all. At the age of only 21 years he directed his first big time short thriller with one of Germany’s most demanded actresses; Katja Riemann. He has also managed to establish a close working relationship with one of the country’s principal music makers behind the scenes; Helmut Zerlett.

Currently, Johannes is preparing the production of his first box office venture. “In the moment of love” belongs to the genre romantic movie and tries to transmit emotions to the topic of anonymization and the correlated longing for love. A modern big city fairy-tale about love and the coincidence its existance is based upon.

Johannes about The Festival

“When I first heard about this project, I was wondering about the niche this event was going to occupy. Art, cuisine, fashion, film, music, sports… all nice, but we have so many offers already. The Berlinale, of course, was the first event that came up my mind. Was The Festival supposed to attract the ‘makers’ of culture or the consumers? Then they explained to me that The Festival was not trying to compete with any of the existing international events. All these cultural facets are just the means to connect people from Europe. The good cause behind this initiative became more and more obvious. It is not about consuming or making culture, The Festival is about cross-cultural relationship building. And we, the creatives can play our part. I am looking forward to be European!”

About Johannes

Johannes Thielmann was born in Greifswald, Germany, in 1981 and grew up in Meiningen, Thuringia, in the former GDR. After the German reunification he was granted a scholarship to Salem, a renowned boarding school,  which he voluntarily left at the age of 15 in order to gain experience through diverse internships and assistants’ jobs in the film sector. In those days Johannes had the chance to work with film technicians like Harry Masterogeorge, Ryan Hurst or Fay Masterson.

In 2001 Johannes founded his own production company Futur Film where he has been, to date, an active writer, director and producer of advertisements and short films.
