Sergi Giménez-Carreras part of The Festival Family

Carrying a big name in one’s name can be both a blessing and a burden. In the case of Sergi Giménez-Carreras it is definitely more of a blessing, because the family roots have always encouraged him to turn his great passion, the art of singing, into a solid professional career.

Like most of his guild, Sergi lives in a pro-European environment. Stages in France, Italy, Germany and Spain are his second home. We have to acknowledge, though, that Catalans are very proud of their origin. For Sergi this combination of home turf pride and European cosmopolitanism has never been an issue. “They are complementary“, he states. “In our world, as an artist you have to start with your own cultural base, become part of it and then create your own style by adding the best facets of other directions. For me, personally, it is always a great experience to learn new facets in France or in Italy. Europe is the hub for classical music. I guess you can call me a proud European…”

We welcome our new Family member and we are convinced that we will see Sergi on the great European stages on a regular basis in the future.

Born in Barcelona in 1969, Sergi enjoyed musical training with María Massiá, Nuria Aragonés and Gino Bechi (Italy), the Folkwang Hoch Schule (Germany), and Miguel Fleta Pierre, Isabel Penagos and David Mason (Spain). He also took master classes with the internationally renowned artists Montserrat Caballé and Josep Carreras.

Among his interpretative soloist performances especially the recovery of unedited works of Spanish writers is worth mentioning, including

  • Liliana by Enrique Granados, symphonic poem performed in the theatre ”Espai Brossa”,
  • Lancelot by Isaac Albéniz, performed in the Sala Eduard Toldra,
  • Follet, lyrical drama by Granados performed in the Salón de Ciento (City hall of Barcelona), the Círculo del Gran Teatro del Liceo, the Cathedral of Lérida and in the Auditorium Pau Casals (El Vendrell, Tarragona).

In this context, Sergi realized a recording with Columna Música. He participated in the Festival Grec 98 with the theatric work ”Sade” (singing a capella), and appeared in the video creation ”Egonauta”. He has also had several entries in the Gran Teatro del Liceo (Barcelona). Recitals include locations like the Espai Barroc, Luz de Gas, Casal Metge, Conservatorio del Bruc en Barcelona, Sala Masimas, the Summer Festival of the Pedrera, concerts in several Catalan towns, Italy and Germany. Furthermore, Sergi performed during the Madrid Summer Festival and had appearences at The Gibraltar Philarmonic Society with The European Sinfonietta.

Sergi has sung the principal roles in Tosca, Bohème, Carmen and the role of Don Alvaro in “La Forza del destino” in the theatre Avenida of Buenos Aires. Various galas in Germany including Puccini, Strauss and Verdi round off Sergi’s artistic profile.

  • Spanish and Catalan songs (Albéniz, De Falla, Mompou, …)
  • Spanish Zarzuela (Chapí, Vives, Sorozábal, Penella, Granados, …)
  • German, Italian and French songs (Tosti, Fauré, Schumann, …)
  • Spanish Opera: La vida breve (De Falla)
  • Operetta: Die Fledermaus (Johann Strauss Jr.)
  • Italian Opera: Tosca, La Bohême, M. Butterfly, A. Lecouvreur, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Don Carlo, La Forza del Destino
  • French Opera: Carmen, Werther, Romeo et Juliette
